Throughout my eighteen years of living, I have had many influences in my life. These influences have shaped me, from my interests to the core of my personality. All of them are different, from inanimate objects to people and intentional to unintentional. Looking back at them, I find them humorous, as they are almost complete opposites of one another. But my influences first start with my parents.
My first influence was my parents and the ethics and traits that have instilled into me. Firstly, they introduced me to racing, which has developed into my passion and dream. A great part of my life is off of racing and I could not live without it. Secondly, I take after some of my mom, her creative and headstrong side. Which has developed my small creativeness and my headstrong dedication to anything I put my mind to. Lastly, I take after my dad quite a bit, from his intelligence and technical aptitude to the curly hair. These traits have pushed me into my major and the way I choose to look and deal with my hair. These aptitudes and traits are the baseline of my being to the other influences in my life.
My second influence is video games, which I have spent a majority of my free time doing when I was not racing or in school. I have always preferred role playing games, which is like an interactive book, being fun and exciting while exposing themes to the player that is in reality. For example, a game shows how religion has a major control on society and not in the best of ways. Even though a majority of a religion’s followers can be corrupted and selfish, there is still a pure person that follows the religion. This exposed the awful truth on religion but also the small hope that there still is for it. These games have also taught me the value of friendship, that no matter how hard you work to achieve something, you need to have friends to enjoy on the journey and help one another. Lastly, the truth behind change and its real value to everyone. As Morrigan from Dragon Age said “Some fear change and will fight it with every fiber of their being. But sometimes, change is what they need most. Sometimes, change is what sets them free”, which thoroughly exposes how change really isn’t bad and what people need. I have taken this into my life and have accepted change when it comes, I can’t be stuck in the past and move forward in my life. Additionally, I have realized more about my own self confidence when Isabella from Dragon Age 2 said “They don’t me, I know me”. This line has affected me to think in that mindset: that people can’t know me better than I know myself and continue to live by that. Video games have been a good influence on me and falls in line with my influence from books.
Reading has been another good portion of my spare time, as I was told in class to stop reading and pay attention. I started reading in an unorthodox way, I watched Star Wars episode 1 and loved it. But when I loved Star Wars, I wanted to know more about it, so I went out and started reading the Star Wars books. Star Wars is a good series to read if you like it because it doesn’t follow the conventional plot style. Star Wars has the good guys fighting the bad guys but the good guys don’t win every time, the bad guys win as much as the good guys. Star Wars likes to show the balance of good vs. evil and how the good guys don’t win every time. I understand this but I still support good, I understand that there must be a balance of both for the world not to be tossed upside down. I read outside of Star Wars but I enjoy books the most when they have a strong female character in it. This is because I have read many that don’t and it has fueled my rage for it. I believe that woman can be just as strong and bad ass as men, but most books like to keep woman as the weak and need help heroine. Both kinds of books fuel my belief in this concept in their own way. I have always read and read when I can, but I have music as well.
Music is a constant in my life that will never leave, I need noise and music is that but it also has emotional effects to me as well. I have listened to music but never appreciated completely until a few years ago when I started following a band, Big Time Rush. Although it is weird to like a boy band from my typical music interests like Rock and pop, they have good music and the guys in the band are great as well. Following this band has exposed me to what the band has to do and go through to be a band and not go under. This has increased my appreciation for bands but also opened myself up to a more carefree trait. From concerts, I learned to let myself go and dance with the music and not care what other people think. Following them as allowed me to stay a fan, though I am not in the extreme fan phase where I cry when I see them. They also provide motivation, as they as a band succeed in their own way and one of the guys works out. Helping me motivate myself to work out more when I am being lazy and don't want to go workout. Music has helped me a lot and been a influence but my last influence has been a big help for me.
Racing is a major part of my life and I always want it to be, one way or another. I started racing when I was four but it was motocross and I was scared of it. This developed me to have a lower self-confidence and just existing until I moved to go-karts. When I transferred over, it was like a switch went off. I found what I wanted to do, something I was decent at and loved. This spiked my self-confidence and I’ve been more confident since. Going from a extremely shy, unconfident kid to a somewhat shy but confident kid. Throughout racing, I've met many people that have helped and supported me, becoming a second family as well. Some of them I haven't seen for a while but it's great when I do see them again. I’ve also learned through racing to have good focus, it helps get the work done faster and more effectively. Before having more focus, I was 'in the zone', not as much as I should have been. After going to a school in Arizona, where a doctor told us that having focus was the key to getting into ‘the zone’ and staying in it, I realized what I had to do. Racing has now become my life and the center of living for me. Without racing, I probably wouldn’t be where I am at today and driving to achieve my dream.
Lastly, I have learned from my experience with any work that I have done. Compared against my brother, he is a prodigy at anything he touches. While I am not, so I have to work harder to achieve the same results. But my parents always told my brother and I that “Work beats talent when talent doesn’t work”. I have taken that to heart as I have to work if I want to get where I want, but my brother is more likely to slack. Thus, I have become a hard worker to get the performance results that I want.
Overall, I have many influences in my life that have all affected me in positive ways. Looking back at these influences have made me appreciate them more and realize the small influences that mean a lot. They have shaped me into the person I am today. With my past influences, I still continue to have more influences as life goes on. I understand that they are influences and use them to become a better person.

Mini-Ethnography
Ethnographic Study of the #5 Race Team
Introduction
The number 5 race team formed into existence in late 2012 and early 2013, in Corunna, Michigan. The team was formed under the number 5, to race in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Series starting 2013. With up to 10 members, each having their own job within the team. This discourse community is one that I am a part of, with many complexities within it. Many people would assume that a race team is a simple minded discourse and not hard to be a part of. When in contrary, it is far more difficult than one thinks. To be truly a part of the team is not a simple act one can pull off. The study of this discourse exposes the discourse fully, from the base to the complexities.
Goal
The goals of the number 5 race team are simple but have reason to them. The biggest goal of the number 5 race team is to win every race we go to. The team strives to do the best we can and win each race we go to. This is the main goal because it is the point of the race, to cross the finish line first. To know that the team did the best out of everyone there and beat them. The secondary goal of the number five race team is to learn from every race we go to. As the team does not win every race they go to, so it is ideal to learn from each race. So when the team goes to the next race and back to the same track. They will have more knowledge and be more prepared than they were last time. These are the goals of the entire team and discourse, providing the base of the number five race team.
Communication
There are many different ways of communication between the members of the number 5 race team. The first and most used method is verbal communication. This communication is used most often as the team communicates with each other at the track. The team verbally talks about all sorts of things that involve from the racing itself to silly topics. Verbal communication is the best for communicating within the team when the team is together. When the team is not together, text messaging and emails is used to communicate with one another. This digital communication is used primarily for business discussion and non-team related topics. As the members of the number 5 team are separated, some more than other. Digital communication is needed to keep the members of the team 5 in between races. During the race itself, the primary communication method becomes radio communication. As the driver of the number 5 race team needs information from the team when racing. Primarily for the spotter to advise the driver when she is clear and provide additional support. Together, these methods of communication provide team 5 ways of communicating with each other. When they need to and for whatever reason it may be.
Participation
Throughout team 5, there are many reasons for communication between certain members of the team. These reasons and who the communication is between is their participation within team 5. Firstly, the driver communicates with the crew chief. She talks about the car, track and asks ways she can improve. This is vital, as the crew chief and driver work together to make the car work. Secondly, the various crew members communicate with the crew chief. They all inform the crew chief about the different parts of the car. Information needed for the crew chief to understand what the car is doing and what he can do to compensate for any changes. Thirdly, the crew chief will talk to the various members of the race team. Depending on the team member, it will be about their specific job and what he wants them to do. This talk can be with one or multiple members, allowing discussion of thoughts and understanding of changes. This communication works primarily when at the race track. Where the various members of the team work on their job to benefit the team. It also works when not at the race track, but the members of the team will work for the team as well as go back to their jobs and family. The team makes sacrifices of their daily lives in order to work within the team and help where they can.
Genre
The various genres within the team are for different situations and topics. When working and racing, the serious and determined state. Everyone on the team is focused on their job and do not veer off from their job and focus. This is too maximize their performance and not fall into any sort of nervousness or doubt. Where the team’s inner bonds work at their prime. The other genre is the relaxed state. Where the team converses with one another without any doubts or nervousness. This state is the where the members connect with one another and form strong bonds. These two genres are the states that the team is in, whether at or not at the track.
Lexis
The number 5 race team has a lexis consisting of racing lexis with a combination of their own unique lexis. The racing lexis is the parts of the cars, radio communication and racing terms. These are words that another racer would understand if they heard, but not a non-racer. For example, if the crew chief were to say: “take two turns out of the sway bar”. Depending on if you are a racer or not, determines if you understand the term ‘sway bar’. This universal lexis is already determined within the sport. It has inherited itself into the racing world. The unique within team 5 was developed within the team itself, different from other teams own unique lexis. Such as the phrase: “It’s cheeseburger time”. A phrase only understood within the team. The lexis for team 5 is unique and not in their own ways. Allowing the team a unique face on the racing body.
Level
The hierarchy in the number 5 race team has various levels with different job entitlements. At the top of the hierarchy is the team owners and the crew chief. As the team owners pay and have the final decision of whatever goes on within the team. The crew chief controls and run the team itself, from the other members to the car. The two halves of the brain in the race team. The hierarchy runs down with the other members, with the hierarchy changing in some situations. Next down the hierarchy is the driver. The driver races the car and communicates about the car itself, the heart of the race team. Then all the crew members are next, with their hierarchy. As the crew members have their assigned job that they rule and other crew members can disturb. The body that moves the race team. Last is the fans. They support the team from the sidelines but lift the spirits of the team when they are at a high or low time. They are the backbone of the team, helping keep the team afloat. These levels of hierarchy is the order of authority in the team and how the team works within itself.
Conclusion
Overall, the number 5 race team is its own discourse community within the racing discourse community. With an obvious and not so obvious goal the team wants to complete. Along with various methods of communication to communicate with other members within the team. Where the members participate in their own ways to help benefit the team. Staying within two different genres and a lexis that the team uses frequently. Finally, there is a hierarchy within the team that governs the authority of their position. Wrapping up the number 5 team thoroughly and exposing the team’s own network.

Rhetorical Analysis
Star Wars Episode 3: Is Anakin Truly Evil?
Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith is the final movie to the prequel trilogy. The war between the Republic and Separatist army is entering its final chapters. The Jedi are ending the war with the clone army and finally find the Sith Lord, Darth Sidious. But Anakin is on a quest of his own to save his wife, Padmé. Trusting his friend, Palpatine, who turns out to be the dark lord of the Sith. In the end, Darth Sidious achieves what he wants: getting Anakin as his new apprentice and eliminates the Jedi. The movie ends with the final Jedi going into hiding and the Sith beginning the soon to be Empire. The author and creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, started the Star Wars saga with episode 4. The intended audience would have been adults and teens. When I would have watched it when it released in 2005, I was not a part of the intended audience. But the intended audience would have knowledge of the later movies and make assumptions throughout the movie. The major one being that Anakin is truly evil and cruel. In contrast, he is portrayed as not.
Throughout the movie, Anakin is shown as not truly evil through his transition from Jedi to Sith. Though the assumption is that Anakin is evil, from the portrayal of evil and cruel actions as Darth Vader, episode 3 shows evidence that argues that case. There are any scenes that play in contrast to his actions that the audience would assume that portrays that he is evil. This is shown through his ambition to save Padmé, being given a new name and crying after murder. These illustrate in detail why Anakin joined the Sith, instead of the assumption of him joining the Sith to be evil.
From the start of the movie, Anakin was on a quest to save Padmé from a future death. There are multiple scenes that support this. The most prominent being when Anakin sternly promises Padmé that he will save Padmé and when Palpatine confronts Anakin about his quest to save her and offering help. Anakin had a nightmare about Padmé’s death and Anakin was frightened by this. Padmé was comforting Anakin in his fright. But Anakin refused to hear and sternly promised her that he will save her no matter what. Later on, Palpatine was convincing Anakin to let him live. As the Jedi have confronted Palpatine being Darth Sidious and Mace Windu was planning to kill him. Anakin was desperate to have a way to save Padmé from her future death. In the end, Anakin defended Palpatine, allowing Palpatine to kill Mace Windu in his vulnerability. As George portrays Anakin, he is desperate to save Padmé and is easily manipulated by Palpatine to join him. This is Anakin’s reason to joining Palpatine or Darth Sidious and the Sith. This is not evil, but caring and desperate.
When Anakin truly joins the Sith and becomes Darth Sidious’ apprentice is another scene that justifies Anakin not being evil. After Mace Windu is dead and Anakin is distraught at what he had caused. Sidious offers him a position as an apprentice to him, which Anakin accepts in his emotional turmoil. Then Sidious gives him a new name as a Sith, Darth Vader. But this is incorrect when you become a Sith willingly. When someone joins the Sith willingly, they give up their name and give themselves a new one. An example is Darth Bane in the book Darth Bane: Path of Destruction. Darth Bane or originally Dessel, joins the Sith. When he becomes a Sith, he gives up his name as tradition is and gives himself a new name, Bane. The name is symbolic to being reborn from their old life to the new one as a Sith. In Anakin’s case, he does not give up his name and give himself a new one. George does this scene purposely, showing that Anakin does not willingly join the Sith cause to follow them. To follow the Sith, the apprentice follows their master in order to gain all the power and knowledge they can get from them. Which is not what Anakin wants, he only wants a way to save Padmé. He joins out of desperation and last resort to save Padmé. This is not evil as he made mistakes that forced him into joining after being manipulated being Palpatine and his own desperation.
In the movie, Anakin is seen murdering the younglings and Separatist leaders, per Darth Sidious’ orders. When Anakin enters one of the chambers in the Jedi Temple and the younglings come out of hiding, asking Anakin for help. Anakin seems to remorselessly murder the younglings. This scene is used by George has a portrayal of Anakin’s willingness to follow Darth Sidious’ orders to save Padmé, no matter the cost. That Anakin will go to extreme lengths to save her, even if he has to murder young children that look up to him. Though many will assume it’s used to show Anakin becoming evil. George contrasts this with the scene of Anakin after he kills the Separatist leader. This scene is where Anakin is shown on a balcony at Mustafar, looking out and the camera then shows his face. Under the darkness of his hood, the lava lights up his face to show that his yellow eyes gone and his tears streaming down his eyes. From the previous scene where he is killing the Separatist leaders coldly and a scene shows his face and yellow eyes have appeared. The same colour that Darth Maul and Darth Sidious have, the colour of the Sith. The previous scene shows that he is evil but the scene after contrasts the eye colour and the killing. If Anakin was evil, he would not be crying afterwards and reveling in the deaths. The eye colour would not change if Anakin is evil as well, they would stay the same. As he is not powerful enough to mask his evilness as Darth Sidious had done. The scene depicting Anakin crying is dismissed by the audience. They see a cold-blooded murderer and not a man seeking out a way to save his wife. George plays the contrasting features of Anakin following Darth Sidious. That scene shows that through all the murder that Anakin performed coldly, he was still good in the end.
Finally, when Anakin becomes Darth Vader and evil as viewers would say, there is another case that proves Anakin’s goodness. After Anakin had acted like a Sith, claiming he and Padmé can rule the galaxy and live free. Padmé refused to believe Anakin could believe the lies that Palpatine had manipulated Anakin to believe, Anakin chocked her as he thought she had betrayed him. Allowing Obi-Wan onto her ship so that he could kill Anakin. Later on, Padmé ends up dying as Anakin’s anger killed her through the force. When Anakin truly becomes the Darth Vader everyone recognizes, the first thing he says to Darth Sidious is asking if Padmé is alive. After Darth Sidious informs Anakin that he killed Anakin in his anger of her. Anakin does not believe this and unleashes his rage through a shout and the force, destroying the machines around him. This shows that in the end, Anakin still cared about Padmé. Anakin still wanted to save Padmé, as much as he was angry with her. He did not want to kill her. This is not evil. If Anakin was evil, he would not ask if she was alive and would not be angered about her death.
Therefore, George Lucas portrays through many scenes throughout the movie that even through Anakin’s actions, he is not truly evil. In the end, Anakin only wanted to save Padmé.
